Kathy Dunderdale is resigning as Premier tomorrow, sparked by a defection to the Liberals and her total absence during the blackout. Real cause is that they've been terminal for over a year, distant third with the Liberals leading by nearly 30 points and a 20% approval rating. Finance Minister Tom Marshall will be interim premier till a leadership election in April. However provincial law says a new election must be held within a year, so sometime this year NL will return their Grits to office after 11 years.

Tories aren't in third anymore. Thanks to the NDP shooting themselves in the foot (they were in first earlier in the year!), the Tories are firmly in 2nd.

Oops, yeah, but they're still behind 52/29. Numbers really started sliding in just a year.

And election would have been interesting earlier in the year, when all 3 parties were close. Now with the Liberals well ahead, we're heading for another boring Newfy election.

What did she do to become so unpopular? Just 2.5 years ago she was re-elected with 56% of the vote.

She got elected on Danny Williams coattails. Williams was HUGELY popular. He got 70% of the vote in 2007.

Half the caucus left do to a disagreement with the leader, and now sit as independent New Democrats.

The next election WAS scheduled for October 2015, however provincial law dictates that a new premier must go to the polls within 12 months of being sworn in.

Some speculation about which PCs might run, nothing concrete yet. Dunderdale's staying an MHA till the election, dunno if she'll run again. No reason to but you never know. My guess is anyone remotely good will wait to rebuild in opposition.

Frank Coleman withdraws from PC leadership.
My understanding that they are no candidates left in the race.
Wayne Bennett was removed from the race
Bill Barry withdraw from the race

New story: http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/newfoundland-labrador/frank-coleman-nixes-move-to-politics-premier-1.2677079

Cites "a significant and challenging family matter"

Yeah right, there's some issue he's hiding that he doesn't want revealed.

So, no one wants to be Premier for a year?

Are you one of those people who believes Danny Williams is a social democrat?

What exactly makes you think that the Reform-Conservatives in Ottawa have a greater claim to the term? Or am I misreading you?

The PCs in Newfoundland are more Tories of the Bill Davis or Bob Stanfield variety, no?

Not so much Nova Scotia - the PCs there seem to have gone hard right

What makes you say that? We Our biggest campaign pledge in the last election was "force the power company to freeze electricity prices". Hardly a free market move.

I just figured while I was politicking there that must have been a result of the NS Tories unique predilection for price controls...
