Safe D, of course. CA-31 situation is unlikely to be repeated here even if 8-9 Democrats will run with exactly 2 Republicans. And this district is, usually, considered among "more conservative" in Bay area....

I'm just hoping his replacement is just as progressive, if not moreso.

CA-31 situation possible but considering the partisan spread I find it very doubtful; CA-33 type situation (independent does well against Democrat in solid Dem district) also possible but also doubtful. Both DKE and RRH seem to reckon state Senator Mark deSoulnier (who has, in fact, already announced) is the frontrunner. Obviously, deSoulnier is a Democrat.

Mark DeSaulnier is a former moderate Republican. In fact, when i studied Northern California (including Bay Area) recent political history - i was surprised how many moderate Republicans it elected in 60-70th, and even in 80-90th. Not so right now - political realignment worked quite well here as well: no Republicans in US House from Bay Area since Tom Campbell (2000), no one in state Assembly (don't even speak about state Senate) since 2008, and so on. All, what remained - some city and county positions. A South in reverse...

An interesting name is considering running for CA-11: John Garamendi.

Needless to say, it'd be a dick move on his part.
