United States and Northern Ireland

Outside of self interest with appealing to the Irish-American Community why does the United States Government have any interest in the Northern Ireland situation ?

Intervening in a white, English speaking country gives us all of the benefits of looking proactive and helpful without the percieved disadvantage that we're throwing money at a bunch of tribal huts.

They got the UK as a close ally...so that gives them about as much legitimate interest (some, but only very very little) as, say, the German government has in abolishing the death penalty in the US.
