Sorry, but I must disagree with you here... There was no objective reason (especially in such a sudden manner) to ban him.

Any of the quotes posted by Gully or Joe would have been sufficient alone to get a more recent poster banned. If anything, the mods have been far too lenient with opebo due to his status as a "forum legend".

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the posts in question were posted many years ago, as far as I understand?

The reason he enjoyed "forum legend status" is indeed because he was a forum legend. There is an objective difference between banning new posters right away for unacceptable behavior, but you don't just suddenly decide to get rid of someone who has been posting for nearly a decade because of some questionable things you discovered from a long time ago, while ignoring the contributions he has made to forum culture.

I got enjoyment out of several of his posts.

Again, I'm making no statement on his morality or character, it's perfectly possible that he's a horrible person, but I can think of many horrible people here that are in no danger of being banned.

There are certain things that should not be said on a decent forum. Repeatedly saying this sort of things without ever making any attempt at changing your attitude gets you banned. The rules are the exact same, whether you are a "forum legend" or a newbie.

Obviously opebo shouldn't have been banned now. He should have been banned ages ago, before you and I ever joined this forum. But as the saying goes, better late than never.

That's inappropriate. The appropriate quote is "Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit" - Unity and lawfulness and freedom. Three principles I would wish this forum to adhere to as well.

There's an enormous Germany at the top of Tony's post. It was too easy not to pass up (not to mention that there's nothing inherently Nazi about the Deutschlandlied; in fact the song's first verse has nothing to do with lording over Europe and more to do with placing national unity first).

Christ man, you sound like Sarkozy talking about Burqas. The whole point of this forum - what sets (set) it apart from everywhere else on the internet - is the eclectic cast of characters that inhabit it. Where else on the internet can (could) I have seen a Thai sexpat, a future [present?] academic on social cleavages in 1967 Wales, an Oklahoman who divulges every detail about his life (with a healthy dose of unreliable narration of course), a former North Dakotan reservation-dweller who has had his life defined by an obscure form of music that originated in mid-1980s DC, a born-again Christian who has gone from gang-member to accurately predicting Sarah Palin's nomination through analyzing airline trajectories, and so many more unique individuals come together and interact? I can read about and debate the 1:12 initiative, PPACA, the 70% top marginal tax rate, and so on anywhere else on the internet, but you'll never find the above anywhere else. And that's what ultimately you guys have all destroyed.
