There is nothing special about ND cattle/beef production or it's farm production in general.  It accounts for 2.2% of all farm receipts and 1.3% of cattle receipts in 2012.

Yeah well, both Dakotas (and Montana!) have about equal rights to him... and he's the only one of the famous Sioux leaders that ND can claim, the others being mostly Oglalas.
The capital of his reservation-era nation, and his gravesite, are in North Dakota. I thought he was murdered in North Dakota, too, but wikipedia says his last home (and thus death site) was on the SD side of the border.

'Wasteland' is a subjective concept that can (or at least has) been applied to everything other than well-settled arable countryside and functioning urban areas. 'Waste' in this context largely refers to human usage and different societies have different uses for different types of landscape.

Grand River, South Dakota, was the site of both his birth and death.  Although he was initially buried in North Dakota, his remains were moved to Mobridge, South Dakota, in the 1950s (Although North Dakota denies that).

Go on Google Street View. Find a random spot on I-94 about 10 miles or so east of the Bismarck city limits. Jump to another spot about 10 miles or so east. Repeat until you get to the Fargo area.

Now imagine driving that for almost three hours.

And if you wish after you're done with that, check out highway 6 in Morton County.
