Probably 3-4, though I don't really use them in my workout regimen. I focus more on bicep curls.

A pull-up mostly uses your back and shoulders which are unquestionably useful muscles.
Upper back.

Actually, these are some of the least important muscles to actually be worked out on by vast amounts of people. The only things they're useful for is lifting heavy loads to above shoulder level, rockclimbing, freestyle swimming, and punching people in the face. (It's not nothing, but...)

Is there an English equivalent of the German expression "Handwerkermuskeln"? Relative underdevelopment of that shoulderblady stuff compared to the arms is a telltale sign of muscle derived from hard work rather than phony working-out. It's a warning sign when getting into a fight (if the person with them is the one being needlessly aggressive.)

Not aware of one, but that's basically my Dad.

The most I've done is about 30-35 but probably lost form on 30.

Poor form or not, 35 pull-ups is pretty damn impressive.

I can probably do 15 or so, if I tried to max.

49% on here are not able to do 3 simple pull-ups.

Just like the women in the report.

On a forum that is 99% male ...

That is surprising, if not worrying.

Yeah the physical education system here is a failure. What we need is a personal trainer for every public school kid.

He's Scottish.  My grandma was 100% Scottish.  I understand their odd way of thinking.  He could probably do 30 pull ups, but couldn't cook a decent oatcake to save his life.  Scottish people... always forgetting SOMETHING. Tongue

I'm not sure. I haven't had to do them since high school gym class as part of the Presidential Fitness Test (which was also the final exam). It was the one part of the test I failed (being allowed to fail one part and still get an A for the final exam).

Only if the other person's chest is above your shoulder level. Cheesy

There seems to be a correlation with another poll on this Forum....

For me, I'm not sure. I have a bad wrist, so maybe none. Most of my strength is below the waist.

Considering that the men in question are nerdy doughboys whereas the women are marines, it's probably not that strange.

I don't think that's exactly how strength training works, but in any case, my boyfriend is three inches taller than me so, yeah.

Also, the idea that it's illegitimate to work out to look aesthetically pleasing to yourself and others is just bonkers if you ask me.  Caring about your appearance is not "phony."

*Sigh* I'm thinking afleitch needs to lead the forum in a collective fitness regimen to get this place in shape. As a moral principle, you should at the very least be able to lift your own body.

Contrary to popular belief on the Atlas, being a man has nothing to do with physical prowess.

Maybe if I were a wild beast. But as a human being, I can use my superior brain muscle to design a robot that will lift my body for me.

Maybe 5% of people who work out regularly (especially people our age) work out because they care about their health. It's all about being able to bang more attractive people.
