This will have 2 fantasy presidential candidates.

GOP:
In 2016, a fresh faced, Charismatic, and articulate Senator from California wins the GOP nomination. People began to call him the GOP Obama. His name is John Warfield. Born in Poverty, He quickly made his way up the GOP totem pole. The Tea Party supported him on one condition, that he choose a Tea Party Conservative as his running mate. John Warfield chooses Rand Paul from Kentucky.

Democratic:
On the other side, the same thing basically happens. Governor Steve Johnson from Virginia wins the nomination. Progressives wanted him to choose a running mate of a progressive type. The Governor chooses Elizabeth Warren from Massachusetts.

Voter turnout is the highest since 1960. The economy improves slightly.
The Tea Party is fully behind The GOP ticket, Progressives the same thing.

Maps Please.

If the Republican candidate is that charismatic, and a Senator from California, he carries California  in the Presidential election.

Thats entirely plausable, though California would be extremely close and might only be decided by a few thousand votes.
