Horrible President, but great in his post-Presidency. FF on the balance.

Pretty much, he wasn't a relate-able President but he had a role on out political system among other things.

He doesn't seem to get enough credit for being the master mind behind Andrew Jackson's reign of tyranny.

Last I checked, Jackson won two easy popular victories.

Jackson only ran for a second term because Van Buren turned him against Calhoun and others.  Furthermore, the Democratic Party, which Jackson used to great success, was organized by VB.

What's bad about those things?

VB also represented a continuation of Jackson's Native American policy.

Also, another slave owner, so that one guy is going to vote HP by default since owning a slave makes one an HP despite the fact that he only owned one slave that ended up running away and then sold, and also was on the Anti-Slavery Free Soil party Presidential ticket.

Well, you may be in the 23.7% of people that liked Andrew Jackson, but for the other 76.3%, what's bad should be obvious.

Interesting to note that like all northern presidents of antebellum Jacksonian America, Martin van Buren was personally and morally against slavery, but given that the unity of the republic was his highest priority (as it was for Millard Fillmore, Franklin Pierce, and James Buchanan who all shared his personal aversion to the institution of slavery) he did all he could to placate the South.

There are many miles of distance between the "not really a fan, as such, though it may look like it to outside observers" attitude of Fillmore or Buchanan, and Van Buren's who was, it is safe to say, the most opposed President pre-Lincoln.

Not bad, a B- for his presidency and a solid A- afterwards.

So, since there are two of these going on, are you going to quit or is he?

HP based on my understanding of his role in the Trail of Tears, although, as I'm not well informed about his presidency as I should be, I'd be willing to be convinced otherwise.

John Quincy Adams?

And Taylor, while a slaveholder, was quite opposed to its expansion outside the West, something that Pierce and Buchanan were willing to entice.

I don't think either of us will. Honestly I should've even brought it up either.
