What glorious news! This makes up for Jim Matheson retiring.

What's with all the congressional retirements today?

Anyway, Obama carried his district (albeit narrowly), so the dems should go for it.

Now we know why he didn't run for Senate. Boehner will miss him.

2 for 1 on retirements today!

I wonder if Boswell wants to try again. If he doesn't, I'm sure Des Moines has a decent Dem bench.

Everybody is retiring! Good god. But yeah, Obama won this district...

But we can't just rule this off. But starting off, this leans D.

Maybe if you don't live in Utah. We Utahns are getting a bit nervous now...

Good Lord. This is like super House retirement day.

Basically, Democrats traded a seat that they were renting for two pickup opportunities in swingy seats.

I doubt it. He'll be 80 next year and Democrats already have a strong candidate with State Sen. Staci Appel.

But man this is really, really great. We have one Democratic pickup each in NJ-3, VA-10, IA-3, FL-13, AR-2, possibly MT-AL, and hopefully others to come from maybe Ros-Lehtinen, LoBiondo or Heck.

The race itself I'm already calling for D+1. We'll have to fight harder in VA-10 for sure because that's a complete tossup. This is a lean D race.

This is just an EVEN seat and VA-10 should start out Tilt R.

I'd trade one solid Democratic in a swingy/trending D district for one blue dog Democrat in a crimson district any day of the week.

Wow, crazy day.

Given Obama won this I think we have the edge here.

Kind of odd. Why go to the effort of trying to win in a mashed up seat against another incumbent, only to retire after only one term? I guess circumstances just changed since last cycle. Maybe him not running for the Senate was because he couldn't be bothered, not strategic considerations as some have speculated.

Maybe the guy just had enough of trying to coexist in the same caucus with the Bachmanns, the Stockmans, the Steve Kings and the other crazies.

Yeah, me too, but it's sad that we Utah Dems have literally no one else, and now we won't even get national Dem funds because Matheson is retiring (some of those funds helped us in a few close legislative races).

SoS Matt Schultz says he's considering, while attorney Matt Whitaker says he's staying in the Senate race.

Joni Ernst, David Young, and Bob Vander Plaats all live in the district and might choose to run here instead of the harder Senate race.

That's really the only explanation that makes sense. Either that or impending scandal. Or perhaps he wanted to retire in 2012 and Boehner asked him not to.

Oh please let Vander Plaats be the GOP nominee; he's a terrible general election candidate.

I read this as a signal Boehner may be retiring at the end of 2014. He and Latham are quite close.

I'd rather him be the terrible Senate nominee than the terrible IA-03 nominee.
