I think he realizes that he can't possibly hope to win in either the GOP primary or the general election, but the threat of a third party run might cause someone to throw him a bone or two to stay out.  To be honest, without seeing some polling numbers, I can't be certain whether he'd hurt Haley or Sheheen more.

If Bauer were to run in a primary, filing is between noon 16 March and noon 30 March.

Parties that choose to nominate by convention must hold their statewide convention no later than 15 May. All South Carolina parties other than the Democratic and Republican Parties traditionally use the convention process, but there is no legal bar to using primaries.

This year, the primaries are on 10 June and the runoff elections are on 24 June.

Petition candidates have until noon 15 July to file their petition.

André's crazy, but not that crazy.  As I said, he's just spouting off in hopes of getting something thrown his way.  Bauer won't run, and even if he does, I'm not certain whether it helps Haley or Sheheen more.  After all, if he does run, André will siphon off anti-Haley votes that would have otherwise gone to Sheheen.
