As proud as I am of America, I am very ashamed that America is turning so hard to the left.  I could go on and on about this, but this is all I will say.

Yes, the entire 8 years of the Bush regime was mortifying.

Thanksgiving is a holiday and our President pardons a turkey instead of people. Yeah.

That fits for me as well.

Aside from that, I also indulge in a variation on socialist patriotism as an outlet for my desires to love the peoples of all nations, celebrate glorious steps of progressive cultural development, and associate sacred socialist symbols with much that seems excellent about humanity. I end up being proud of identification with certain political ideas and virtues of character instead of identification with particular countries or ethnic nationalities.

I'm normally proud of Australia, I mean we have a great electoral system, compulsory voting, medicare is excellent as are a lot of other policies.

But, I look back and even today and question so many things.

The White Australia policy is just revolting and the fact it lasted up until Whitlam makes me ill. Similarly, the entire Stolen Generation which was genocide is by far the worst any Western country did during the the 1900's (excluding war/nazi). Recently, the entire Asylum system debate is again, disgusting and to top it all off when elect the 'intellectual nobody' Tony Abbott as out PM. Not to mention that hatred of Gillard for no good reason.

ew Australia, ew.

When I think of America's incarceration rate it is when it comes closest to this.

I think the rest of the world understood that the 2000 election was the result of a partisan SCOTUS. I was very demoralized when the US chose to to ratify the first term of the Bush Administration in 2004. More recently, I haven't been fond of the NSA spying on our allies.
