Vermont isn't any more like Canada than any other border region.  And no, they shouldn't join Canada.  Unless we can give New Jersey to Italy... cuz New Jersey is getting politically like Italy in my opinion Wink

Yes. Vermont needs to be liberated.

Vermont isn't any more like Canada than any other border region.

Where else in the US can Socialists be elected to Congress, and maple syrup flow so freely? Vermont is the most 'Canadian' state, by far.

It isn't any more culturally Canadian than say, Minnesota.

Obviously, the solution to this is to combine the US and Canada.

Vermont is not only too good for the US, it's also too good for Canada. Seriously, do you want the fair people of this state to live under the rule of Stephen Nutjob Harper?

This is like saying the conservative Canadian provinces should join the United States because they are becoming too much like Montana and North Dakota. We are bordering countries, and since borders aren't absolute in culture there will be some overlap. Diversity is good.

No, every state is a state, no matter how similar or different to another country culturally or physically. On top of that, you might as well get rid of NH and ME, as Canada's borders would look horrible with only Vermont.

I take exception to the idea that Canada is inherently more left wing and thus Vermont, which is also left wing, is like Canada.

Stephen Harper would beg to differ.

This. Canada really isn't as liberal as a lot of people seem to think.

No, but it would be interesting to see how Vermont votes in Canadian elections, given that a significant number of Canadian Conservatives would vote Democrat if they were in the States.

Frankly, I wouldn't mind if we took Vermont and every liberal city and town in the US and annexed it to Canada.  We'll leave all of the crazy Republican areas as the US.  The Canadians could drop Alberta and give it to the states in exchange (along with the crazy parts of rural Ontario).

I am fascinated by the desire of groups to create even greater political segregation in North America. The Big Sort has created a high degree of geographical polarization within the states of the US, yet apparently that sorting isn't enough. Is there nothing to be gained by a diversity of viewpoints within a state or country?

I am not trying to create political segregation but Vermont is just so liberal.

Look at the surrounding states PVI:

NH: D+1
ME: D+6
MA: D+10
CT: D+7
NY: D+12 or D+13

Look at Vermont PVI:

VT: D+16

In my mind that's all the more reason for them to stay in. 100 years ago VT was one of the most GOP states in the nation. Who's to say where they will be 100 years from now?
