In Rick Santorum's universe, being conservative automatically puts you outside of the One Percent. I think Santorum may actually hate the super-rich on a latent, subconscious level that he isn't even aware of. It just bubbles up to the surface for fleeting moments occasionally with comments like that.

Santorum is a socon, not a 1%er, as he realizes you can't win elections by appealing to a minority of the electorate.  1%erism can never be a majority position.  Social conservatism could be, tho it won't be for the next few years until the gay marriage issue get finally resolved and the socons abandon the War on Gays to double down on the War on Abortion.

He held himself pretty well on the show until they started talking about gay marriage...then he slowly got lost in the absurdity of his own statements until Colbert changed the subject at a moment's notice.  Then he continued to do his best (despite some of the audience laughing at his movie.  Shame on them!)

While he's part of the 1%, his politics have not been centered on 1%er issues.

I thank God, that a relationship to me, is not about economics (and relationships break more over money than anything else, or so I am told), but about love. I have that "luxury." But Rick has a point, if it is his point, that romance is not what drives many relationships. It is a business arrangement.

Technically, they've centered on both. Tongue

Seriously, the vocal nature of his hard-right social views have led people to ignore he's about as conservative on economics.

Ironically, people often seem to recast him in the mold of a latter day---Bob Casey! Cheesy

Who said 1%ism was only about economics?

Perhaps he's a commie like his grandfather? If so, I welcome him to the far left. Smiley

I saw a photo on the Twitters the other day that he was wishing his son a Happy Birthday on FaceTime. There was a guy next to him and I thought to myself, "Wow. That guy looks a lot like Colbert." It turns out his appearance on the show aired that night, the same night that Bush was on Leno and the same day I got some great news! But that's not all: he was actually in Northeast Philly (ten minutes from my house) earlier that day for a screening of his movie!

He's not really conservative in the way that the broader GOP is conservative at this point. It's almost like what he's offering is a milder version of the Far Right governments that ruled Spain and Portugal for most of the 20th century -- giving as much power and influence as possible to religious institutions, an economic policy aimed more at social stability than economic growth and that privileges "traditional" elements of the economy (manufacturing, in Santorum's case) over things like finance and IT.

His point wasn't about money.  It was that marriage is a social institution.
