http://www.newrepublic.com/article/115204/government-shutdown-2013-collapse-boehner-plan-ends-stalemate

New Republic wrote up a particularly scathing article about Boehner's ill-fated attempt to get a compromise bill through the House GOP.

When I heard that Boehner failed to get his own party to agree to his own compromise bill, I was struck by how far gone the GOP is (at least in the House).  This final blunder seems to be the icing on the cake for Democrats, making their narrative of the shutdown even stronger.

The resolution of the shutdown will not be a moment of both parties coming together (which could have redeemed to GOP in the public's eyes to some extent), but of the Republicans loudly falling apart at the seams.

The GOP should've stood their ground. They got nothing in the deal at all.

As much as it pains me to say it, this is correct.

I think both parties have some good input to most situations.  Plus, I am a former Republican and have a Republican family and largely-Republican tilted facebook group of friends.  But, the Republicans did this to themselves.  They caused the shutdown in the first place and caused pain in millions of Americans lives and homes.  Therefore, I do not think they deserved to get anything out of this deal.  Obamacare should be discussed, but not at the expense of federal workers' paychecks.  Right now, because of this debacle, I hope the Democrats take back the House next November, but things could change in a year.

Anyone nervous that the President's quick remarks could sabotage the House vote?  It's like he was claiming victory before the clock strikes 0:00.

No.  The Tea Party's size in the House is overstated.

I'm not that worried, but I heard it mentioned by Dana Bash on CNN, so I was just throwing it out there.

Anyway, the House has the bill in their possession, so a vote will presumably happen shortly.

The GOP should've stood their ground. They got nothing in the deal at all.

They got nothing in the deal precisely because they created a situation where a deal had to be struck to begin with. They would have gotten more of what they wanted if they had just shut up and passed a clean CR in the House to begin with.

Instead, they picked a fight they couldn't win and made promises to their supporters that they couldn't keep, all on the assumption that the president would simply throw up his hands and allow his biggest accomplishment in office to be killed off and that in the polarized legislature we have they could get enough Democrats on board to override a veto.

If you think this had any chance of working, you, sir, are a profoundly stupid man - as stupid as the House members who drank Ted Cruz's Kool-Aid to begin with.
