What would the 1976 Electoral College map looked like if Ronald Reagan had beaten Gerald Ford for the Republican nomination?

It would be close, but Reagan might have been able to pull it off in the end.

Former Governor Ronald Reagan (R-CA)/Senator Richard Schweiker (R-PA): 271 Electoral Votes
Former Governor Jimmy Carter (D-GA)/Senator Walter Mondale (D-MN): 267 Electoral Votes

Carter might have been able to portray Reagan as a candidate similar to Barry Goldwater in 1976 in a more effective way than 1980, as the Reagan would have been running on defense all throughout the campaign.

In addition, Reagan did slightly worse in Vermont than his national average in 1980 and 1984. Furthermore, Michael Dukakis almost won it against George H.W. Bush in 1988, this proving that the state began to move towards the Democrats in the 1980s.

Basically, Reagan would have been a much better nominee.
