Many in the administration had assumed that the consensus building James Monroe was an easy lock for re-election. He had managed to build a winning coalition for the Republicans in 1812 to give them a majority against Adams, who'd benefited from the backing of both the Federalists and the Fusion party. Throughout his four years in office, Monroe had reached out to the leaders of both opposition camps and had maintained high approval within congressional circles. Some had even assumed a Clintonian "Era of Good Feelings" might emerge for the incumbent. They predicted wrongly, as it turned out. Few predicted the populist fervor with which former Senator Andrew Jackson, freshly arrived back in Tennessee to celebrity status following Indian Wars throughout the West, would sweep through the Republican Caucus. Soon, moderates and nationalists jumped ship entirely from Monroe to attempt to nominate William H. Crawford or the highly respected House Speaker Henry Clay, but to little avail. Jackson, feet firmly planted on a platform of ending the status quo on the National Bank, lowering tariffs, and ushering in an era of universal white male suffrage, had been nominated. In order to appeal to the shrinking Northern Republican base, Daniel D. Tompkins of New York was nominated by Vice President nearly unanimously. The Federalists meanwhile, at a lowly populated caucus, nominated former President John Quincy Adams. With Jackson matched up against Adams, it would be a battle of the opposites. The fiery, slave-owning, planter yet populist war hero from the South and West against the frosty New Englander would surely be a match for the ages. The third factor in the race was of course DeWitt Clinton, who himself had been narrowly nominated against a pro-Adams movement within the Fusion party. "Quasi-Federalists" had nonetheless secured the nomination of John Marshall, Adams' Secretary of War, for Vice President. Clinton, who himself had a sturdy political base in New York, while at a disadvantage in terms of party machinery outside the state, would be as good a third candidate as any.

Now, whom do you, the voters and electors, believe should lead the United States into the future? Vote now! Three days.
