In 1940, President Roosevelt follows tradition and doesn't run for office for a third term. In this scenario, who would have taken his place on the Democratic ticket? Would the GOP still nominate Willkie? How would the election play out and who would win? How does this affect American politics both at home and abroad?

The GOP was pretty decimated in 1940.  It wouldn't have mattered much who they picked.

A better question would have been who the Democrats would have picked.

During wartime, with Democrats in control, widely viewed as being successful with recovery from the Great Depression?

Think 1988 but probably more of a landslide.

I'd say Hull/Lucas for the Dems. Pubs still go with Willkie. If LBJ doesn't chair the DCCC then Pubs retake the House. In which case you don't get Lend-Lease or FDR's 1940-1 Atlantic policy without his political genius in the WH.
