FTR, Walt, I don't particularly care for Robert Byrd either. But as I pointed out in a separate thread regarding Jesse Helms, Robert Byrd's unsuccessful filibuster did no harm to African-Americans while countless pieces of legislation sponsored by or voted for by Jesse Helms did do harm, directly or indirectly, to African-Americans, among other groups.

Helms sponsored AIDS funding for Africa in his final year in the Senate, so he turned from at least some of his horrible views.

What Helms says: "More funding to Africa for AIDS research!"
What Helms thinks: "I don't care for them n@#$ers myself, but at least they got AIDS the decent, Godly way - men having sex with prostitutes and then transmitting the diseases to their wives later. None of that sodomy like the queers in San Francisco, nosiree!"
