If America is spelled R-U-S-S-I-A.  Putin is the winner.

How? The threat of US intervention is what put this all into action.

Yes, but Putin acting like the Lone Ranger simmered things down for now, to everyone's relief.

Nah, it was a classic good cop/bad cop Putin/Obama tag team on Assad.

The lines between good and bad cop with a Putin/Obama duo are too blurred.

Yes, but Lief has a point, and I think someone else mentioned it.......they did have a private chat at the G20 and if they talked more after we'll never know.

Personally, I think we should intervene nonetheless, since he still will be killing civilians with other kinds of weapons. However, if (big if) he is sincere and really stops using chemical weapons, then this is most definitely great news.

Russia has entered into the conflict and emerged as the probable strongman.  Obama's mishandling of this opened the door to this.

Ah, good to know that JJ is as laughably bad at international politics analysis as he is with domestic politics.

The bad part about all this is even if Assad plays it well and avoids being murdered by the American army, it still weakens him and increases the risk that the Islamists will take over in Syria.

His absolute refusal to give Obama any credit whatsoever is most likely clouding his judgment.

Was that a victory parade they had in Benghazi a year and a day ago?

Yeah, that's why they carried around Vince Foster's body.

It's better than nothing. I still wish we'd do more to help the moderate rebels though.

What is a moderate rebel?  Perhaps they only murder Christians on Sunday. If I heard the Matt Liare and the defense secretary interview correct, today; he the secretary is arming the rebels.

Obama put himself into this position on this.  He went to Congress, needlessly (and I agree with Lief on that point), where it was beginning to look like the Senate may not have approved.  Dempsey testified that the planned attack would not eliminate Assad's CW, so what is the purpose of the attack?  Punishment?  Kerry said it would be "unbelievably small," so we're not talking about much punishment.  Deterrence?   Deterrence from airstrikes happened only once, briefly (Libya, 1987, until Locherbie).  We can go back to the 1930's to see the failure of that tactic.  Remember how "shock and awe," was going to demoralize the Iraqis?

Obama raised the Iranian question, legitimately.  How much deterrence will there be from an "unbelievably small" airstrike (Kerry), that doesn't eliminate WMD's (Dempsey), and that only happen with Congressional approval?

I actually have been supportive Obama's drone strikes, but they are continued, robust and strike strategic targets.

You mean the attack that most Libyans condemned and repeatedly apologized for?

So Obama was Mr. I'm going to war and now looks like a clown because he's going back on his stance of airstrikes. He's given the enemy a chance to look good and redeem himself. How do we not know there were any chemical weapons to begin with?

Agreed, but that didn't improve or prevent the situation.

I do think there were/are CW, however I'm not sure if the regime ordered the assault.  It might have been a single field commander.

You think we should still bomb them?
