This was brought up in the "Tea Leaves" thread.  Appears to just be a game of "Telephone", where a public figure says something, and it gets repeated a few times so that the original meaning gets inverted.  Here's what King actually said:

Here are his exact words:

"I am considering a run for president" seems to have been picked up by various news outlets as "Peter King Announces 2016 Run For President".

I think Peter King 2016 will be like Chris Dodd 2008.

I constantly find myself asking what in the world made Chris Dodd think it would be a good idea to run for President.

Probably a bit of Giuliani '08 too in that King (if that Fenian-lover decides to run) would bank his hopes on Florida.

Florida doesn't have an early primary anymore.  They've moved back to Super Tuesday.

I personally think Peter King just wants to be out of the House, and doesn't want to announce his retirement in a way that encourages the office-seekers to bug him.

Ah, looks like other sources are reporting a different direct quote from King (in the same interview?) which sounds much more definitive:

OK, if King did say that, then yeah, that does sound like a definitive statement that he's running.

But what does that really mean though?  He doesn't have an actual campaign.  He hasn't announced that he's going to step down from Congress any time soon or anything.  Is he "running" in any sense that's different from how Santorum and Paul are running right now?  (That is, testing the waters in the early primary states, but without actually forming an official campaign.)

In that case, I stand corrected

From the omniscient, omnipotent webpage that is Wikipedia:

(emphasis added)

They just link back to this same CBS story.

Look, it's just a semantic point at this stage, isn't it?  King has not filed with the FEC, and has no campaign.  It looks like he did say "because right now I'm running for President", but what does that mean, on a practical level?  He's doing the same testing of the waters in the early primary states that's being done by Santorum, Paul, Cruz, Jindal, Walker, etc.

I wonder if that does mean he won't be seeking reelection in 2014.

Two random thoughts.

It would be funny to have a President King. I'm well aware that Maine's Governor King became its Senator King.

If King does well in the primary, how soon will later candidates announce presidential bids? Would have five 2020 candidates announcing in 2017?

I think his campaign will end before 2015. Lack of fundraising, most likely.

More like Thad McCotter 2012.
