The interesting thing is that if Bushie's actually believes his death probability numbers are real, that's probably why he think his policy is so great.  At a 35% chance of death in his 30 years after purchasing a 30-term life insurance policy, if you ignore inflation and potential gains from investment (the former assumption is faulty but the latter is not, considering who we're talking about), he should actually be willing to pay anything under $194/month for a $200,000 policy.

Yes, you have to present value everything. A dollar out now is worth more than a dollar received 15 years from now. I make no financial decision myself without doing a present value analysis, using a discount rate appropriate for the risk involved in the investment. Otherwise, it's like flying an unpressurized plane at night in a storm over the Himalayas without instruments.

I did this sort of thing when deciding when to start taking social security. It turns out that by waiting, and factoring in appropriate actuarial assumptions, I can make about an 8% annualized return on each dollar I forego receiving between age 62 and age 70, with essentially no risk.  That makes waiting worthwhile.

Right, although the only real factor in Bushie's discount rate would be inflation, since I don't see him doing any investing (even CDs... the man has no money). My calculations were simply to illustrate a general point.
He has a lot of high interest credit card debt. The time value of money is much more critical for him than any savvy investor who is trying to squeeze an extra percent here or there

Green beans? Are you feeling okay Bushie?
Don't worry. I'm sure they were the canned variety. Little salty and mushy green cylinders, bearing no resemblance to actual food.

Great point Memphis. The opportunity cost to his parents of diverting money from paying off the credit cards to premiums for useless life insurance, or whatever, is probably horrific, like some usurious but legal rate of 21% per annum or something. But the "real" America does not think that way. They just don't understand, and have no interest in doing so.

Changing subjects, but I should end up with about 1,550 calories today.  My dinner was one serving of chicken and rice casserole, green beans, roll, and one piece of chocolate cake for dessert.

What did you eat for lunch? Why are you eating chocolate cake when your family is diabetic? I must know!

I had my usual 2 turkey sandwiches, a bag of cool ranch doritos, and a DDP.  I was just having a piece of dessert.  Nothing much, nothing real shameful.  It wasn't a real big piece either, maybe a moderate sized piece.

EDIT:  This is my usual when I take my lunch 3 days a week.  The 2 days I go out is usually Subway.  I'm not making the Burger King mistake again that I made last week!

It has been a wonderful day.  I made a lot of progress at school and then had a good conversation on here about insurance, a nice diversion from the usual subjects of the Update.  I had a nice Wednesday Worship Service at church and then came home and watched Big Brother.  I'll be hitting the sack about 22:00.  Tomorrow evening, I will be watching TCU vs. Texas Tech and then Big Brother.  Since tomorrow night is Thursday, I will allow myself to stay up another hour since the next day is Friday.  Friday afternoon, we take JJ to the vet to get her stitches out from her spay surgery and then after we get home and drop JJ off, it will be time for some Mexican food at On the Border.  Saturday evening, I have a birthday party for my cousin's youngest child who turns 4.

Dude, I call the United States of America as a whole 'The Bad Place', not St. Louis (a place which is certainly not unusually bad compared to other parts of the Bad Place).  When that policy was purchased - in the late 1960s - my father was making money so quickly and easily I'm sure he hardly noticed the expense.  And all because of demand-push unionized inflationary Keynesian economics.  So, while I thank dad for that kind thought, I really thank Keynes and LBJ for making it possible.

I am most impressed that you so skillfully segued from financial pornography to the matter of the perimeters of Mordor to a gushing paean to Keynesian economics, all in just one pithy little paragraph. It is interesting that immediately following that so called glorious economic era as to which you tender such encomiums, the US went into the economic dumps until The Gipper came riding in on his white horse (with in real dollar terms the worst performance of both bonds and equities in US history, and that includes the Great Depression). You actually in real dollar terms from say 1966 to 1982 would have lost money. Why did it all fall apart? Well another time perhaps. I did not mean this to segue, to use that word again, until such heavy lifting into the mysteries of macro-economics. And it's Miller Time to boot here on the Gold Coast, where seemingly everyone has fancy cars but me, and everyone including me of a certain age has had a face life, where gyms are more common than churches, and fats live in other zip codes.

A mother-รucking Lexus isn't fancy??

(but thanks for the compliment)

The morning went well.  I got a 100 on LAP 7 test and now I'm in the middle of LAP 8.  LAP 8 has no test, so I'll be able to proceed directly to LAP 9 sometime tomorrow.  After LAP 8 I will have 3 LAPs left plus a project in Course 3.  I should get to Course 4 by September 30.  The title of Course 4 is Presentation Graphics Animation.  That's where 3D comes into play.  Course 4 should take me to Thanksgiving break and i should be 2/3 finished with Course 5 by Christmas.  I plan to work a lot over Fall Break which may take off a few days, but without that, I'm on track to finish on April 16.

No, all they have is me.  Maisha doesn't double dip.  Each child gets one sponsor.  This is to ensure everyone has a chance to get sponsored.

The afternoon went really well.  I am very near the end of LAP 8 and should have it finished by lunch tomorrow.  I'll start LAP 9 immediately after that and should be ready to get into LAP 10 by Tuesday or first of the day on Wednesday.  LAP 11 would be sometime Thursday and the project would start the following Monday, most likely.

As of this weekend, I will be down to 7 months left in the CADD program.  In fact, I will be 1/3 of the way through my CADD training on September 30.

BUSHIE

Have you tried the Pretzel Bacon Cheeseburger at Wendy's?  I had one at lunch today and it just might be the best fast food burger I've ever had.

Put down whatever burger you were planning on having tonight and get one of this things, man.

I know I know.  Tis but a jest.  But you have to admit LAP 4, LAP 5, LAP 6 etc. and talking about "courses" would invite such a joke, no?

As someone of Hispanic descent (distant, but I've still had homemade tamales), On the Border is not Meixcan food.  It's Tex-Mex.
