My question though is what if Nixon wins the nomination and picks Reagan as his running mate. Let's say Reagan doesn't run in the primaries and Nixon is the nominee.

A difficult scenario as both are from California. It would not be a wise chioce in my opinion. Humphrey wins anyway.

You're right I'm changing it to Nixon/Rockefeller.

After Richard Nixon lost the elction in the house in 1968 while wining the popular vote by  narrow margin, the seeks a rematch in 1972. As he ended Vietnam, HHH is a poluar president. However, Nixon attacks the President for the situation in Vietnam, as the North continues to attack South Vietnam.

President Hubert Humphrey/Vice President Ed Muskie 378 EV. - 55.4%
Former Vice President Richard Nixon/Governor Nelson Rockefeller 160 EV. - 42.9%

New York goes democratic by a 51-49%-margin.

Interesting because this map looks similar to a Democratic landslide today.

Well , Texas and Indiana are republican states. Texas might become a toss-up by 2020 or so, but not earlier.
