I took Unisom for a while but it made me too dehydrated, to the point of having to go to the doctor.  I switched to Sominex.  Good sleep and no hangover.

Oh, and martinis or bourbon sometimes. Smiley

If necessary I slam down some Nyquil, or Tylenol Severe Allergy if available... that stuff knocks you right out.

Very rarely - usually only if I'm in a hotel or god forbid sharing a hotel room with someone - I'll take a 5mg Valium tablet.

I occasionally took some plant-based tranquilizer throughout. I also came very close to taking an actual sleep medicine (got the prescription for it and bought the pills), but even though things were bad I was never quite that desperate for sleep.

Lou Dobbs.  If I can't fall asleep I put his show on and it puts me to sleep immediately.

Sure.  We're talking about sleep aids.  An aid can be defined as anything.

A note on the subject.  Sure, a "brief relaxation" can certainly make one, especially a male, very drowsy.  I've found though, if you're all alone, going to bed fully locked and loaded can drastically increase the chance of a sexytime dream.  I discovered this back in my teen years, when a "brief relaxation" was basically mandatory before hitting the hay.  Then one night I got lazy, and wound up having a glorious dream where I was going to town on Elisha Cuthbert!  No lie!  And this was right around when The Girl Next Door came out!

Hubba Hubba!  This pattern continued over the years.  I suppose if one is going to dream that night, and one is all by their lonesome, might as well make it a good one.  Sexytime dreams happen exclusively if I did not briefly relax before bed.  Last night I did... and I wound up having two dreams where I was mauled by zombie dogs and shot in the abdomen with an assault rifle.   I'm on a sabbatical from life out in PA at my dad's place, and I'm the only one here.  Perhaps tonight I won't briefly relax before bed and the next thing I know I'm performing the ol' in-out-in-out on Alison Brie or something...

Diphenhydramine sometimes. I never noticed much effect with melatonin.

I use a pillow as a sleep aid to make where I lay my head softer.

Being serious though I don't use sleep aids, I only take Nyquil when I'm pretty sick but it doesn't help me fall asleep, just sleep longer. Took sleep aids once from a friend when I had some crap going on in my life last summer, they knocked me out and gave me some wicked bad dreams though.

I'm more or less dependent on sleep aids. Typically some kind of antihistamine. Sometimes a benzodiazepine. And, of course, the brief relaxation technique.
