Haha.  The same Joe Walsh who failed to pay child support is counseling blacks on family values?

To be fair, these are all good things.  Except the last five, which are just racist.

If they're so good, then why are they exclusively a dream for black kids? Does he ever make these statements about "the white community"?

Put another way, why is the presumption that these are problems the default black kid is presumed to face, while the default white kid doesn't?

(Note: that on average, more black kids than white kids check a box doesn't explain it.)

That's part of the racist part.  Obviously all races should aspire to this, but at least he didn't say (for the majority) really racist crap on the surface.

What does that even mean?  Do you have any idea how ridiculous you sound?

"That's, you know, like, kinda, ya know, part of the kinda a little bit racist part.  Obviously all races should aspire to this, but at least he didn't say, at least for the majority of the majority the really super, obviously blatantly racist crap on the surface which is near the top up above."

Why is that we get these threads, with these exaggerated topic lines that then only disappoint. Walsh is horrible and for the headline, well I want my damn money back Miles! Tongue

It is a common view amongst Conservatives that gov't dependency is destructive and that combined with the failing schools and decline of the family, are the greatest hinderances to the African American community. Since the Jackson and Sharpton types don't focus on this, they are seen as distracting from the real issues for self centered publicity seeking, while the problems linger. Though not worded with enough sensitivity in this case (not surprising considering it is Walsh), I would reckon that the inability of our political system to have any discourse when it comes to policy as it relates to the African American community, without the Conservative view being labled as racist, is a good way to ensure that problems aren't dealt with. It is just too damn dangerous to touch for a politician and that isn't healthy for the community or for the country and that is one place where I can safely say the left is hurting the African American community.

To be fair, these are all good things.  Except the last five, which are just racist.

If they're so good, then why are they exclusively a dream for black kids? Does he ever make these statements about "the white community"?

^ Case in point.

Does not the very leadership he references use the same isolating approach when talking about problems in the community? Is there not a conference called the "State of the Black Union" or whatever it is called? I recall watching something like that back in 2006 on C-Span with most of the CBCers and some other leaders there.

To be fair, these are all good things.  Except the last five, which are just racist.

Six and Seven are aimed at curbing out of wedlock birth and sexual abuse. I don't see how you could see the first five as not racist and suddenly six and seven are just horrible. You see what I am saying, the minute the issue changes to something you don't care about or disagree on, it becomes racist. Either all of the first seven are racist or all seven are not.

Eight is about criticizing the approach of the leadership in the black community. Is it really advantageous to the community to have a set of leadership shielded from criticism? Considering the current situation, comformity of opinion is the last thing the community needs, because there is no where to go when the approach fails. Nine is the worst one followed by ten. Though worded differently, calling on anybody to be responsible and self-improving is hardly horrible. Ten is rhetorical excess, but criticizing gov't dependency and considering it a source of some of the problems, is hardly out of line either.

That's nice NCY... you have it all completely backwards.  Fix black people by restoring the family, fixing the schools, and gittin' 'em off gubmint.

No.

It's called poverty.  It's called a poverty trap.  Fix poverty by lifting the wages of black people and children will do better in school, families will be more likely to stick together or at least suffer fewer negative consequences because they have sufficient money despite being a single parent household... and eventually.. eventually... THAT will allow them to stop being dependent on government.

Republicans are so good at always looking to fix the symptoms of an underlying problem... and then doing that through negative reinforcement or punishment.

Because they have the moral compass of 7 year olds.

Yeah, you're right. Change my stance to "Most are fine, and some are bad"

Well blacks are disproportionately affected by the quantifiable social ills that Walsh cited. For example, something like 70% of black kids are born to single mothers and blacks are 2-3 more times likely to drop out of high school than whites.

What Walsh is touching on is a very real set of social problems that are faced by blacks, especially poor blacks.

screw that prick and his faux concern. I hate it when white people act like this. As if they feel anything but joy whenever they get to talk down to black people.

Do you want to say it's quantifiable that "young black women need to say no to young black men who want to have sex" and that's the kind of thing that should be called out as racial?

You might be right, but I of course never said that was the case. You really should start reading what people say before responding with hostility man. You seem to do this all the time.

I only stated one opinion of my own and that concerns the tendency to label everything the left disagrees with as racist when it concerns the black community. In a politicial environment polarized based on ideology, this not only damages the discourse, it ends it and then you have one party that doesn't seek to get those votes and the other that doesn't need to because it already has them. Like I say on immigration all of the time, the incentives are wrong and that is why nothing ever changes.

The chicken or the egg, Snowguy. How do you raise the wages without improving the quality of their education? Certainly that is a considerable disadvantage for large numbers of people of all races when they enter the workforce.

If you don't see the racism then you're a racist yourself. I mean, the (hilariously bad attempt at) appropriation is enough of a big screaming no-no...

No, but openly stating as Walsh does that only blacks suffer from these problems is.

The word 'only' does not appear in his statement. You merely inserted it into his statement in  your mind.

If that's not the case, then he's implying he's one of those reverse racists who wants whites to live without fathers, not get married, and not have fathers and has a dream only black people achieve these things.
