Smitherman is Perry's staunchest ally, he's just keeping the GOP base happy with comments and stands on hot-button issues like these.

We all know Smitherman is really positioning the State AG's office as launching pad for higher office in the job he really wants.....GOVERNOR in 2022 or 2026 depending on what happens to Abbott.

Look at the sentence without the editor's insertion. Why would anyone think that "gay people" belongs in that parenthesis when he's clearly talking about "sexual orientation" (as compared to race, color, religion . . . )?  Those are not the same thing. It's a category mistake. Anyone who equates them is either being disingenuous or doesn't have their noggin working properly.
