Is telemarketing salesman one of the worst job there is?

I don't think I've ever done something I've hated so much. I feel morally reprehensible for every call I make.  

People were complaining about working at fast food places in some thread not long ago. But as someone who's worked both places let me tell you, I'd rather flip burgers at McDonalds for a decade than work six months at a call centre.

Yep. I've worked a lot longer than six months in a call center and it's certainly quite better than McDonald's, not to mention better paying. Of course it's an inbound center where we take calls instead of calling people, but the OP didn't distinguish the type of call center.

I did it once for a few weeks.  I liked it - it made me very horny for some reason, and I would really bang the heck out of my gf at the time when the shift was over.  Sales is rather nifty in that you are sort of deceiving/fooling someone, bending them to your will - really a lot like sex.

Well yeah that would be worse, but then at least in Sweden the occupation of door salesman is as good as dead.

I'm obviously meaning call centres where you call people up. It's in the title. The other thing isn't hard at all. As for pay at least in Sweden, there's no way you make less money working at McDonalds. It's not as if I'm hypothesizing, I've actually done both things, and at least in my book pestering people to agree to buy something that any intelligent human would not buy, is not nearly as bad as washing the McDonalds restrooms. At least it's sh**t on the out-side, not on the inside.

The people who have to pick up the port a potties after Mardi Gras is over have the worst job ever. I hope they get paid a lot of money. Sadly, they probably don't. Interstate road construction in July has to be indescribably awful also. As far as emotional, rather than physical, destruction, anything in pediatric oncology has to unbearable.

A lot of what makes a job bad or good is the attitude one approaches it with.  For instance I suspect that most people here other than Herr Ost would rather work in a call center than a sewer, yet the job can be rewarding with the right attitude.

I worked at an outbound call centre for 7 years before being promoted to analyst. But we weren't selling anything, just polling. So, while we were pestering people on the phone, I didn't feel guilty about it, and it was at least interesting.

     I've had to call alumni about donating back to their university. I've also done manual labor. I found the manual labor to be far more enjoyable.
