Earlier this month I completed MS and KY. There are 2808 county equivalents (officially 2809 using the new CT regions) visited in all 50 states, with 335 left. There are 27 states (+DC) where all the counties have been visited.

Red for residences (at least 2 months including mail received). Dark blue for overnight stay (4 or more continuous hours of sleep not in a moving vehicle). Light blue for intentional destinations. Green for drive through (including meal stops). Yellow for train, boat or airport only.

Here's the state level view, based on residences and counties slept in. To count as slept in I require that I slept at least four hours while not in a moving vehicle. To count as a residence I had to sleep there at least two months and receive mail at that address.

90% (resided): IL, IA, MA, MN, NE, NY, TX
80% (10 or more counties slept in): FL, IN, KY, MO, OH, PA, WI
70% (6-9 counties slept in): CA, CO, GA, KS, MD, MI, NC, TN, VA,
60% (4-5 counties slept in): AL, AR, HI, ID, ME, MT, NH, NJ, ND, SC, SD, WY
50% (3 counties slept in): AZ, CT, LA, NM, UT, WA, WV
40% (2 counties slept in): AK, DE, MS, NV, OK, RI, VT
30% (1 county slept in): DC, OR
If blue, then all counties have been visited in the state

Note: CT drops from 4 to 3 counties slept in. UConn was in Tolland county, but is now in Capitol region along with Hartford and Windsor (old Hartford county) where I have also slept.

Trying out the same scheme (but with 20% for no counties slept in):

I have been in 17 regions out of 20, all but Abruzzo, Molise and Apulia.
However I don't think I ever seriously stopped in Basilicata, and I have only vague memories of a couple others.

Updating this even though the thread has been merged with one that specifically says "US counties".

I have since been to Abruzzo and Molise and visited again (after one time when I was five or six) Umbria and Marche. So it's now 19 out of 20 being generous to Basilicata.

You are missing about as many states in New England as the Deep South (depends how you count). I think you'd enjoy some time in New England and I'd be happy to make recommendations.

Yes, I’ve wanted to get to upper New England for a long time. Would be nice to do a Fall trip.

The south is a little easier attained, though. Can do a weekend in Atlanta or New Orleans without having to rent a car, etc etc.

I’ve considered Portland ME as a brief upper New England destination, though. Appreciate your thoughts!

Blue: Visited (31+DC)
>80%: Lived in (2+DC)
>70%: Visited for multiple days (15)
>60%: Slept in, or daytripped (Cool
>50%: Stopped/set foot in (2)
>40%: Passed through (3)
>30%: Airport only (1)

Flipped: Plans to visit in 2023 (6)
Red >30%: Possible visits in 2023 (2)
Red >50%: Have not visited (11)

Barring several turns of events I won't quite make it to 40 states by the end of this year (under current plans I'll have 37), but I'll probably be in a decent place to hit that mark in 2024. If I get to Maine, then I'd have visited every Biden-won state, and in any case I will very likely surpass 400 electoral votes visited this year as well.

Following up on a thread from last year:

Red >50% = states I've lived in
Red >30% = states my parents have lived in since I moved out
Blue >50% = states I remember spending at least a night in
Blue >30% = states I've been told I have spent a night in (but I was too young to remember)
Green >50% = states I've visited by road but haven't spent a night in
Green >30% = states I've switched planes through but otherwise have never been in

I'll turn Arkansas Blue >50% on Saturday, which, by my count, will be the 30th state I'll have spent at least a night in.  By the end of the year, I hope to have Washington State Blue >50%, South Carolina Green >50%, and North Carolina Blue > 50% Smiley

If I don't end up getting the flights to Panamá I'm hoping to buy today, my backup is to turn Tennessee and Kentucky Blue 50% and West Virginia Green 50% for spring break.  I also hope to turn Washington state Blue 50% this year, too Smiley

Update!  Using the same key, but minus the "my parents have lived there since I moved out", because, meh, I haven't lived there.

Slowly things are falling into place! Smiley

Obviously, not a lot happening a pandemic year, with one particularly notable exception!

I have also now shaded the states based on whether I've toured the state capitol building there (if the capitol offers it, THANKS MARYLAND, or if they offer tours on a regular enough schedule that I can actually plan around it, THANKS GEORGIA). Darker states I have toured, and lighter states I have not. I'll be turning one of my grey states into a blue one with dark shade next month.

A trip out west allowed me to complete KS, CO, UT, and NE. There are 2874 county equivalents visited in all 50 states, with 270 left. There are 33 states (+DC) where all the counties have been visited.

90% - Lived in
70% - Spent a significant amount of time in (extended vacations or with some places in the Northeast, just been there a lot)
50% - Spent some amount of time (overnight stays or extended day trips)
40% - Drive through, probably stopped for a meal but didn't stick around
30% - Airport layovers (I don't normally count these)

I like the mob-rule map. If you are collecting counties, you might want to look into the Extra Miler Club. There's both a formal club and a Facebook group. They give certificates for members who get to 1000 counties (and 2000 and 3000).

Thanks. I don't plan on collecting every county - I have better things to do with my time and money than zigzag across every Kansas cornfield county, etc - but I do plan to get all Western counties and half overall eventually.

Needs more New England, PNW, Alaska, and Upper Midwest methinks, trying to reduce down to just no Florida and maybe one more state. Won't cry if the Great Plains or Kentucky are completely left out in my lifetime....but only Florida am actively avoiding.

Alaska is next on my list

Currently on a trip through the Midwest (and went through a lot of corn fields in different states) and I’m kinda starting to agree with you. Even with my added bonus/challenge of seeing birds in all of the counties, it’s a lot of driving through nothing. Still want all 50 states and would also like to get everything out west.

There's a definite overlap between birders and county collectors. The president of the Extra Miler Club for county collectors is a serious birder.
