The poll, conducted by Public Policy Polling, a Democratic firm from North Carolina, found that Democrat Alison Lundergan Grimes leads McConnell 45 percent to 44 percent in the 2014 race for the U.S. Senate.

The poll, a telephone sampling of 1,210 Kentucky voters, has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.8 percentage points means the race is essentially a dead heat.

The poll was commissioned by the Progressive Change Campaign Committee and Democracy For America, two organizations that oppose McConnell. The survey was conducted between July 19 and July 21.

The poll also found that 51 percent of voters oppose McConnell’s job performance while 40 percent said they favor his performance.

The New York Times polling blog, fivethirtyeight.com, ranked PPP as the 15th most accurate public pollster in the 2012 presidential election. Despite being a Democratic pollster, the blog found that PPP overestimated Republican nominee Mitt Romney’s performance by 1.6 percentage points.

If this is accurate I'm genuinely elated for her.

Fan or not, you have to acknowledge that he'll have more money than anyone else to throw at this and make Grimes seem completely out of touch.

Yeah she'll probably get that same 45% on election day, too.

The dems shouldn't underestimate Mcconnell, he's a political killer. I think he's favored to be reelected. The only thing which could weaken him, it's primary.

This. I'm sure a fair few of those unhappy with McConnell are TP Pubs who'll come home on E-Day. Or at least not vote for ALG. Tongue

I don't mind him, I'm just realistic that his money machine will literally nuke Grimes.

He is literally going to drop a nuclear bomb on her? Like actually drop a physical bomb? Will she be in Kentucky at the time? Wouldn't that hurt Mitch with the electorate?

The only ones who will survive are those rich GOP Kentucky Republicans who own survival bunkers. So McConnell wins 99-1 or so. Lean R.

Interesting who paid for it. Would be nice to see the internals. Some of the question-wording is a little sketchy too.

This actually checks out with a Democratic Poll from the Mellman Group. They've got Grimes up 2 against McConnell, 44-42. Apparently, his job approval is at net -20 according to them though, at 38/58.

McConnell's campaign apparently felt the need to release a statement saying that the polling was fake. That talk is par for the course for Republicans these days.

Among people who actually know who the candidates are, Grimes leads by 15!!!

Oh man, Mitch is so screwed!

I heard his advisers generally opposed the suggestion, so they pocketed it as a wildcard move if things get bad.

This IS PPP and its very early on, PPP always overestimates democrats in polls when its not at least a half year away. I'm actually not surprised by this, not that this won't be a close race, it certainly will, but to think Grimes will win is a little too confident... so far.

This is a bad talking point that needs to stop. I was hoping only Oldies bought into this stuff.
