Standard conservative response about charitable giving being the proper source of caring for the poor. Ryan however doesn't even tithe so he should boost his charitable giving. Biden is/was worse but that's no excuse.

I don't know, how do the Kennedys feel about the Pope's views on abortion?  Are they going to start paying taxes on the $400 million they have in Fijian banks?

Everybody cherry picks religion. It's only hypocrisy for those who pretend to care in the first place.

At least last year, the answer to this was 'by having a very strange personal-dictionary definition of 'preferential option for the poor''.

Pope Francis may have the strongest challenge to elitist economics since Communism vanished as a meaningful threat.  The Catholic Church has never had "every man for himself" as a standard of morality.

I can hardly wait for him to challenge American plutocracy.

You're asking how the certified biggest hypocrite in modern US politics can do something hypocritical.

Pope Francis has no connection to the pastoral child-abuse scandal in the Catholic Church in America.

It is hard to say who the worst hypocrite in American politics is these days.

Well, yes, I agree. What's the point?

Paul Ryan worships at the Church of Ayn Rand now, so it doesn't really matter.

For once, you said something not stupid about religion.  Congratulations.

Probably by compartmentalization of his ideology into separate "social" (traditionalism/conservatism) and "economic" (libertarianism/individualism) spheres.

Ryan's idea of "social justice" is probably limited to anti-choice/"pro-life" re: abortion, and maybe charitable giving from the private sector.

Glad to know I'm not the only one who's noticed a sharp increase in selfishness and everybody-for-themselves-ism lately.

I am quite sure Ryan would claim that his preferred policies are the best way to lift the poor up over the long term, and would see no inconsistency at all.

The Hard Right claims to love Jesus when talking to the common man in the Bible Belt yet follows the doctrine of Ayn Rand when doing economics and politics. Such is hypocrisy. The Hard Right has a soft ethical standard for itself and a  hard one for all others.

That is probably what he would say. Reality doesn't seem to bother Republicans one iota.

Yes! Everyone should care though. Much truth can be found through studying the history of religions and civilizations.

By ignoring it, as all Catholic politicians who have disagreements with the Church do.

Yes, at least when Thatcher cut services for the poor, she didn't claim she was actually improving their lives--she defended it as necessary for the nation as a whole, and if some people lose out, it was for good reason. Ryan might claim that by cutting services and spending for the poor he is out to help them, but it would betray quite a lack of guile if he actually believes it. His policies are not Jack Kemp's.
