Actually they found out from my posts here, but I've since acknowledged it.

Not an atheist, but I certainly wouldn't if I was, hell my folks would flip out if they found out I believe in evolution.

Yes, and they're both atheists too.

I'm surprised "not an atheist" doesn't have an "(abnormal)" following it.

I was raised without religion by an atheist mother and a vaguely Catholic father, so I'm guessing it was always sort of assumed.

Yes.  My mom doesn't think anything different of me and my dad is completely with me.  I actually didn't know he was so anti-religion until we got into a discussion about it one time over mojitos at the shore and he was happy to hear I was.

I would say that my mom thought I was just being a rebel for a while b/c it's in my nature, but I think by now she understands it's central to who I am; and when she really thinks about it, she understands that I was an atheist from the very beginning.

i'm not so I didn't have to, but my mom would flip out if she found out I am considering converting to mormonism.

How would "Uncle Bill" feel about this?

I'm not an atheist and even if I was, I'm like Matt from VT, my parents would flip out.  It was hard enough telling them I am a Democrat (or was at the time, and still considering rejoining the Dem Party) and voted for Barack Obama not once, not twice, but THREE times (including the 2008 Primary).  That was hard.  I sure as heck wouldn't tell them that I was an atheist if I were one.

No, my whole family broke from Catholicism long before I was born. I really wish I was raised by Catholics, since they go to one of the most fundamentalist protestant churches possible.

Hey guys, it's France, you can't imagine how atheism is strong here. It's when you're religious it's really a surprise...

Wow. For some reason I assumed that "broke from Catholicism" meant a slide into apathism, not a slide in the other direction. Especially given your social issue positions.

sadly it is perfectly normal for humans to make up fairy tales to explain complex things.  it has been done since the dawn of civilization.

I told them and they were like "yeah sure why not". They said they didn't give me a 'religious education' and something about how religion provides morals, but it's not like they ever instilled any religiosity in me or are any more religious than I am. In short, religion is not something they care about.
