According to the Atlas numbers, Nixon took Cook County with 53.4% of the vote in his landslide 1972 re-election(he won Illinois with 59%).

Since Cook County also contains many suburbs of Chicago that skew the vote slightly more Republican, can anyone find out if Nixon also carried the city of Chicago itself? My gut feeling is the city narrowly voted McGovern.

Please & thank you.

Talk about a landslide.  1964 was a big year for Democrats but it was tempered by the fact that Dems pretty much only hit their ceiling in most areas of the country and actually lost a lot of ground in the deep south. 1972 was remarkable for the Republican strength in areas that had been democratic strongholds before and have remained very Democratic since.

Interesting. Does anyone have results for Minneapolis in 1972? Nixon won Hennepin County that election, but the suburbs (which made up a majority of the county even back then), could have skewed the countywide vote.

McGovern won CD 5 56-44. It took in all of Minneapolis plus some of Anoka county. I'm guessing McGovern probably got in the high 50s.

Nixon came close to winning NYC too. 48.27% to 51.46%. It was about 70,000 vote difference.

No GOP has come close to that since. Reagan got 38.64% in 1984, which is second highest.

Nixon only got about 42% in NYC in 1972.

Bronx
McGovern   55.2%   243,345
Nixon   44.6%   196,754

Brooklyn
McGovern   50.8%   387,768
Nixon   49.0%   373,903

Staten Island
McGovern   25.6%   29,241
Nixon   74.2%   84,680

Manhattan
McGovern   66.2%   354,326
Nixon   33.4%   178,515

Queens
McGovern   43.4%   328,316
Nixon   56.3%   426,015

OVERALL
McGovern votes = 1,342,996
Nixon Votes = 1,259,867
Total Votes = 2,602,863

1,342,996 / 2,602,863 = 51% [McGovern]
1,259.867 / 2,602,863 = 48% [Nixon]

And there is your math lesson for today.

I guess you are right.  For some reason I thought McGovern got closer to what Mondale got in 1984.
