Is this the most conservative place in America? It's the fourth biggest city in Wyoming, and voted in Romney probably at least 80% because the county voted in about 85% and Gillette is 63% of Campbell County's population. I hear that oil is a big thing there, and it even voted more republican the rural counties of Crook and Weston right next to it. Rapid City is staunchly republican too, and holds up much of the support for South Dakota as a republican state.

I generally think there is a hub of conservatism that centers around Wyoming. LDS Utah, LDS in eastern Idaho, Conservative Eastern Montana and somewhat conservative Billings compared to liberal Butte and Missoula in the West, conservative Western South Dakota and Nebraska, and somewhat conservative Northern Colorado (besides Fort Collins). But then again Laramie and Cheyenne aren't that republican. So I think particular Central and Northern Wyoming are at the center of the hub.

Anyways, I was just rambling and wanted to throw it out there. Any thoughts? Opinions?

There's actually a difference between why LDS areas are conservative and the High Plains are conservative.

For the LDS parts, its largely because the are, as long as nothing bad is said about LDS, reliable members of the Religious (not necessarily Christian) Right.

For the High Plains, they are staunch antienvironmentalists because of their MASSIVE and very profitable dependency of dirty energy.

In both the High Plains and the Mormon Empire, its fair to assume that no one else wants to live there and many of the people who would vote as liberal as they do conservative are scared of such places and may be even a little upset that those places even exist.

This is not to say that Elder Jacob from Provo will not agree with what Joe the Driller's Helper from Casper will not agree on basically everything, but it does mean they agree for different reasons and you can't really say there's some sort of organization for the "fifth column" headquartered in Campbell County, Wyoming.

Makes sense, similarly there's a different reason someone from San Francisco would vote democratic and someone from Rural VT would vote democratic?

Actually, most of the oil and gas drilling occurs in the SE part of the state.  Gillette is the center of coal mining in the state and even the Headquarters of a major publicly traded coal mining company, Cloud Peak Energy, are located in Gillette.

Don't know how many Mormons there are in Gillette, but the two groups that swung most heavily towards Romney were coal counties and Mormon counties, so there you go.

Most Mormons are in Western Wyoming in Uinta and Lincoln counties. But yes coal (thanks for correcting me) is a big thing there in Gillette. The Hispanics (8% of Campbell County population) there are probably the majority of the democratic voters. I bet just about 90% of whites chose Romney.
