This proves that people in English and Spanish speaking countries are more sophisticated about giving politically correct answers to questions about race (as compared to much of the rest of the world), and realize that admitting that they don't want people of other races as neighbors would make them look bad.

Not so sure. English Canada is one of the wierdest place ever. Racists are very well hidden.

The obvious answer, it doesn't take an academic to look at this map and realize that the most ethnically/racially stratified nations are rated among the most "tolerant". As an example, look at Guatemala's coloring. How do you expect me to take this poll as a serious study of racial tolerance with results like that? This is rubbish.

This is one of the worst devised studies I've ever seen. Beyond the self-reporting problems others have brought up, race means very, very different things in different countries. It's just impossible to compare.

Also some of these numbers are evidently from 1990. Pretty systematic critique of this map's methodology here (not a direct link due to the expletive in the URL).

It's amazing how the media reports Social science research, isn't it?

Austria is not shown on this map.

But I have the results of the Austrian Values Survey 2008:

Which of these people do you not want as neighbours ?

People with another skin colour:

2008: 18%
1999:   7%
1990:   8%

...

The most unwelcome neighbours for Austrians are Drug addicts, right-wing extremists and drunk people - while people with many children, Jews and people with another skin colour are the most welcome neighbours.
