I was wondering, if Canada was part of the United States and the ten provinces were made into ten states, which provinces would be more Democratic, which more Republican and which would be swing states?

If the change were immediate, every province except Alberta would be Democrat, Alberta would be swing.

If the change took place over a few years, and if there was integration (say, integrating the Conservative Party into the Republicans, Liberals into Democrats. Presumably, BQ and Lib-Dems would remain independent), then it's different. Quebec and the populated parts of Ontario would be solid Democrat, the Maritimes and northen territories lean Democrat (although Yukon and NW territories might switch in the distant future, becoming more like Alaska),  Manitoba and BC swing, and Alberta and Sascatchewan lean Republican. There might be even more of a switchover, if either Canada trends rightward or the Republicans trend leftward.

DanielX is kind of right, but the Canadian Conservative Party is much more liberal than the Republicans. Some provinces might adjust, but B.C. would not be swing - it would be about as Democratic as Ontario, according to polls.

Alberta would be closest, according to the poll I saw, voting Kerry, something like 56-44.

Well, obviously every province would be Democrat.  However if Canada and the US were one for a long time, the result would be that the Republicans would move slightly left in hopes of winning elections - they wouldn't win many North American elections in their current form.

Its a nice idea, though jettisoning the South is even better.

Er, I think you mean the NDP.  The Liberal-Democrats are a British Party.

I dunno.  The left fring of the US would have viable parties in the Greens and LDP.  It could fracture enough Dem votes to ensure GOP victories for some time to come.

All would be democratic. Some more than others (British Columbia and Quebec heavily democratic........Alberta more of a toss-up).

And the two parties are not similar parties. If anything the Canadian Liberals and the LDs are similar. The NDP is a Socialist party.

The great irony of comparing U.K and Canadian politics is that the positions of the Socialist and Liberal parties in both countries is more or less reversed...

If a merger happened  c. 1990, There would probably be a Liberal/Democrat merger, but not a Republican/PC merger.  However, a number of New England Republicans and Southern/Reagan Democrats would switch to the PC, if it could play its cards right.  Of course considering we are talking about the Progressive Conservative party, that may be too much to hope for.

On the Canadian map for the preference for the presidency of the United States, Alberta supported Bush.

I've never understood how they created that map. It seems almost as if they pulled it out of the blue or something.

Also, why is it that the U.S. states are bulked together but not the Canadian provinces?

I don't know the answers to either of these questions...  I wish I did!

That map was a joke, but probably not so far off from being accurate.

It is a joke. As mentioned before, Alberta may be conservative but they still don't like Bush. Mind you, it would be a swing state, and for more moderate GOPers it would go Republican.  As mentioned before, it is Atlantic Canda that likes Bush the most. I have no idea why. It should be noted that while they vote Liberal federally, every atlantic legislature is under PC control.

They wouldn't necessarily have to switch.  Since the US doesn't have parliamentary government, there wouldn't be as much advantage to being in the majority party, as being on the winning side on specific issues.  So members of Congress might continue to stand as members of the traditional Canadian parties.  The NDP might try to organize in major US cities, where races would be contested on a NDP vs. Democrat basis.

At the presidential level, support might be organized on an ad hoc basis, with promaries to elect delegates to the Democrat and Republican conventions, but without a formal tie to the Canadian parties.  The NDP might run its own candidate.

The difference is, while they may not support it, at least they tolerate it. I don't think that is the case in Montana.  Remember, SSM is legal in both Saskatchewan and Manitoba.
