I'm surprised it took me over 10 years to figure this out, but basically yes. Of course some bands do breakdowns in kind of a unique way (Ampere being an obvious example), but all "heavy" music without some type of breakdown is typically garbage. The only exceptions is some sludge/drone stuff.

Nope. I consider The Dillinger Escape Plan heavy, but I they don't really use breakdowns.
