With extreme limits to its powers, yes.

Huh, apparently I've found one issue where I'm to the left of TDAS. Tongue

It works in the UK.  Italy changes leadership often, and a monarch could provide at least some symbolic unity and stability.  In Thailand, which has become volatile in its government, at least has the King for unity.  Sure, Italy is not the same thing, but having a symbolic monarch as many European nations do shouldn't be too problematic.

Dude, if you really want to defend constitutional monarchy, Thailand is probably one of the worst examples you could possibly come with... Well, unless you're an Opeboist. Tongue

And anyway, if you look at the way Italian monarchy provided "stability" in the past, I wouldn't exactly consider it a good thing.

Counterpoint: Juan Carlos of Spain.

Anyone who thinks retaining the monarchy in Italy would have made the country more stable in subsequent decades understands precisely nothing about Italy.

In order for a monachy to be a stabilizing factor it needs to be seen as a genuinely national institution with legitimacy all over the country and in broad segmens of society.

The Italian monarchy pretty clearly failed both of those requirements. So republic it is, with all its flaws.

But I would have preferred a strong presidency with a popular mandate and real executive powers.

LOL, the poll now almost exactly mirrors RL results. Tongue

Still, as Al said, anyone who thinks monarchy could have brought anything good to Italy in the wake of WW2 is utterly deluded.

IIRC (and I am likely wrong, I don't have a good grasp on much of Italy's role in WW2) it was the monarchy that acted as a catalyst for the downfall of Mussolini. The same occurred in Romania before the Red Army rolled in.
