We've got our resident Todd Akin. And he has a red avatar.

Memphis, do you think if a woman goes outside dressed in a "slutty" outfit and gets raped that it is her fault for dressing that way?
I would not blame a victim of rape. Ever. At the same time, we all live in an imperfect world and need to be mindful of that fact. I wouldn't leave my front door wide open lest somebody loot my modest possessions. It wouldn't be my fault somebody stole my stuff, but it would have been wiser to be more conscious of the risks out there in the world.

He's not a Todd Akin type, he's a bro who thinks that being politically liberal excuses him from having to develop a personal understanding of people who aren't like him.

Needs to realize that he's not the only one living on this planet and that the world is far less black-and-white than he seems to think it is.

I still remember that the first time I got into a gender argument with him he had a picture making fun of Romney's "binders full of women" comment in his sig. lol...the irony

I'd say Snowstalker is far more Todd Akin than Memphis. Still, he's an HP, and a fine one to talk about a war on women.

He's racially insensitive too.

I'm willing to bet that all our well-known nutty Republicans precisely think that being politically conservative excuses them from having to develop a personal understanding of people who aren't like them.

Plenty of people here avoid that type of personal understanding without that excuse.

I will give him some credit, his ability to build people made of straw is uncanny and nobody else on this forum can build a better one.

Well he's a FF on everything that doesn't have to do with women...

And even his statements there don't strike me as malicious so much as misinformed. And he's occasionally right (I'm reminded when certain people on here were arguing that men and women think exactly the same save for social conditioning and he was arguing the scientifically correct position that men and women have different brain chemistry). But he also makes a lot of gross statements unfortunately.

Overall a FF and I enjoy his presence on the forum very much.

This is a very biased OP, I bet a lot of HP voters think Opebo is an FF(at least previous polls would support my assertion). FF

FF. He can be brash, I guess, but the outrage over what I'd consider to be some of his more ordinary perspectives says more about his naysayers than him.

^  Especially religion.  And I'll admit that I haven't even read any of his posts on women to know what's got everybody so butthurt about him.

It was a shame we didn't get to hang out when he came to town a few weeks ago.

How about the one I quoted, is that enough for you?

And look, I'm a proud anticlerical (in the sense that I vehemently oppose any attempt by institutionalized religion at exerting social control or political influence) and often find myself in agreement with people like Afleitch, but Memphis' pompous and condescending attitude toward any form of religiosity is just as insufferable as the attitude of real-life fundies.

The fact that he has any FF votes at all shows how unbelievably male this forum is.

Chill out, RandomNewbie.  Memphis is otherwise fine.

What's the problem there?  Your taking that post and immediately comparing him to Todd Akin is absurd and probably insulting.

Plenty of people here avoid that type of personal understanding without that excuse.

That wasn't supposed to be an attack on conservatism (albeit I think an argument of the kind you're thinking about could be made, at least wrt the peculiar American form of conservatism)...
