Facing postwar recession, President Upton Sinclair has attempted to grapple with issues on multiple fronts. In foreign affairs, he faces strengthening communism overseas in the form of the birth of Communist China in 1949 and the war in Korea. Domestically, despite his best efforts, the economy has refused to turn around. To cap it off, Joseph McCarthy and a number of legislators like him have become self appointed "Red Hunters", making claims that Soviet sympathizers are inside the state department. Under pressure, Secretary of State Henry Wallace was forced into resignation in 1950 after revelations discovered a pro-Soviet past. However, Sinclair did see progress on civil rights as a new Enforcement Act was passed, attempting to ensure fair and discrimination-free voting practices down South where corruption was notorious.

Now, with a new running mate, Sinclair is seeking re-election. From the Democrats comes Senator Estes Kefauver, a Southern liberal populist attempting to form a rural coalition to oppose the Socialists. From the Republicans, having not seen the White House since the 1920's, general and WWII hero Dwight D. Eisenhower has been nominated alongside the first female on a major ticket since 1872. Finally, a small splinter group of angered Socialists has formed the more radical Socialist Labor party, charging that the Socialists have become, in essence, liberal Democrats and nothing more, pointing to the lack of success of more recent Socialist candidates and presidencies.

Sticking with Sinclair. It's always better to help with the absolute necessities of the people first so he'd at least ensure more social programs for the poor from the government with more taxes on the rich rather than the highways which was much more of a luxury than anything else.
