I'm opposed to monarchies, so if she does abdicate then I can only hope she isn't replaced.

Yes, it is. She reminds me of Speaker Boehner. Despite the approval from both the House of Lords & House of Commons, she still refused to pass the equal rights bill for gays throughout the Commonwealth. She's just asking for something to happen to her & her incredibly frail husband Prince Philip.

Um, mods?!?! Pretty sure threatening Her Majesty is a bannable offense.

The only one worthy of a bannable offense is you for your constant and annoying nattering that everyone else be banned.  You sound worse than a nagging old woman.

If someone believes and says that Lizzy should step aside, they are free to do so and say so.

Freedom of speech shall not be denied!

You're disgusting and treasonous for suggesting the abolition of the best form of government known to man.

Uh, excuse me, but the best form of government known to man is not an anachronistic, elitist regime where the octogenarian relic of a bygone era clings by her finger nails to the vestiges of an oppressive past, where her ancestors caused untold hardship, misery and death to their own citizens, and where the heir apparent is a philandering degenerate.

Why is Lief such a defender of the English Monarchy?

Because he enjoys trolling.

How is she clinging? She's the most popular and supported she's been in nearly 40 years and support for the Monarchy is the highest in 30 years.

As your increasingly dramatic Romney-posturing before the election showed, you enjoy the jollies you get from being melodramatic.

At best, you just don't get it. At worst, you're looking for attention.

The way the queen and her husband treated Diana before her death, and certainly after her death, was absolutely deplorable.

All this ridiculous protocol that must be followed, at least in the mind of the royal family.

Diana dies in a tragic car crash.  The queen is in Scotland, therefore no flag flies at Buckingham Palace.  The queen returns to Buckingham Palace, the royal standard goes up on the flag pole because the queen is in residence, the royal standard comes down, the union jack goes up and is then lowered to half mast.

The union jack should be flying at half mast within minutes of hearing of the death of Diana.

The only reason the queen reacted was because the public was so outraged with the queen and the royal family they were ready to overthrow the monarchy.

I'll humour you

a) the Queen's first consideration was for her Grandchildren, not her hysterical people
b) a flag has NEVER flown at half-mast over any palace... because that flag pole has a ceremonial purpose and has a tradition going back hundreds of years - that situation created a new tradition
c) plus as a FORMER member of the Royal family, she had no formal right to any kind of official mourning.

If it had been the Duchess of York, instead of Diana, think people would have their knickers in a twist more than 15 years later? I think not, Diana played as much as she was played.

The Queen was startled, and didnt know how to react to something that was so unexpected and in many way in explicable. Talk to many Brits old enough to have engaged in the orgy of grief , a big whack are deeply embarrassed.

You place an American sensibility where it doesn't belong, I don't blame you for not understanding

I love that the first time the Queen publically put her family before her people - she got ripped apart because she wanted to protect two teenage boys who lost their mother.

Surrounding the death of Diana, the queen was about as warm as a dead fish.

And I say hang royal protocol.  It has no place in the world of the 21st century.

And Winfield's newly adopted egalitarian act is even less convincing than Simfan's "intrigues".

Come on, Winfield, we know you better old friend Smiley

Diana had her faults, the world knows.

However, she did not deserve the shoddy treatment she received from the so called royal family.

And Kalwejt, feel free to criticize me all you like.  However, please restrain yourself from attacking Simfan, as he is no longer on this forum, and therefore cannot defend himself.

Overthrow?  You overthrow someone or something in power, and insert your own leaders.  You just need to stop inserting your head in your ass.

I will point out to this forum that, all things being equal, it is more the responsibility of the father of the children, rather than one of the grandmothers, to console the children after the loss of their mother.

Oh, and by the way, I shall simply consider the source from whence they came, of ignorant and  boorish remarks made by a certain individual who shall remain nameless, as I choose not to engage in such childish and callow behavior.

Because you obviously know the ins and outs of how the British royal family relate to one another emotionally, as this entire thread has made abundantly clear.

'Whence' already means 'from where' or 'from which'. I would recommend changing 'whence' to 'which' if you want to keep 'from', or removing 'from' if you want to keep 'whence'.
