Elizabeth II has been Queen for the past 61 years, since 1952.  Born in 1926, she is now 86 years of age.

She was hospitalized earlier this week, and released.

Is it time for her to abdicate and turn over the responsibilities and duties of the monarchy to her 64 year old son and heir, Prince Charles?

Please vote and discuss.

No other elderly monarch's ever been ill?

Off course she should stay in.

No, of course not.

Mods, is there something we can do about closing this thread? I find it very offensive and disrespectful.

Oh, get off of it.

This is a very legitimate topic for discussion.

If you don't like it, don't read it.

It's hardly disrespectful.

Barely a week goes by without one of our papers shouting about such a suggestion.

Off course she should stay in.

My point is not that she has been ill, this simply brings this matter to the forefront once again.  The point is, she has been the monarch for a very long time, and that perhaps it is time to turn the reins over to someone else.

Several other European monarchs have abdicated, the most recent ones listed below, have given up being in the limelight, and turned over the sometimes demanding responsibilities of monarchy to someone younger.

Wilhelmina, Queen of the Netherlands September 4, 1948
Leopold III, King of the Belgians July 16, 1951
Charlotte, Grand Duchess of Luxembourg November 12, 1964
Juliana, Queen of the Netherlands April 30, 1980
Jean, Grand Duke of Luxembourg October 7, 2000
Beatrix, Queen of the Netherlands, effective April 30, 2013

(Wiki)

I really see no reason Elizabeth II should not follow suit, and enjoy retirement.

If you abolished the whole thing this wouldn't be an issue.

Sooooooooooo..... Amercian...

But on topic... I know people a QUARTER of her age who have been in hospital longer with gastro. Suggesting the SECOND hospital visit in more than a decade is reason for abdication is just unappreciative of how she views the role, nor understanding of her constitution.

She's already given Charles and the younger royals more official duties in her place, which reflect her understanding of needing to slow down. She doesn't believe in retirement, she doesn't believe it's a job to do, but something she must do and has a duty to do.

Again, mods, is there anything we can do about this disgusting sort of discussion polluting the forum?

This. Abdication is incredibly, incredibly shameful in the culture of the British monarchy. The worst case option would presumably be a prince-regency.

Of course not; I support the British monarchy, and hope it keeps up the tradition.

No, I do not want the husband of the horse-looking marriage-wrecker becoming King and would like to delay that the most possible..

Nobody is slandering the good name of Her Majesty.  Some, such as I, simply believe she deserves a well earned retirement in her advanced years, away from the pressures of office.

And for the record, if the people of the UK ever decide to abolish the monarchy and establish a republic, I for one will not be raising an army to restore the House of Windsor to their former glory.  Smiley

Winfield has this really strange way of seeming like he's arguing in bad faith even on issues where I can't think of any conceivable reason for him so to do.

The British tradition in these matters is to have a regency if the monarch suffers from senility or madness.  I'm all for having a regency start right now, but for tradition's sake it should wait until Charles is on the throne before a regent is appointed for him.

I really don't get why people STILL have issues over this. Even Diana was dealing with it with good-nature before her death... Plus, my rule is, if their kids are happy, sod what everybody else thinks.

An abdication followed by an expensive coronation is definitely not what Britain needs right now, and while I don't have an issue with the Prince of Wales eventually rising to the throne, the Queen's steady reign is one of the most vital aspects of keeping the monarchy in place. A small hospitalization for some gastrointestinal problem should not make her resign.

I look forward to watching her Platinum Jubilee celebrations in 2022, by the way.

Lol.
