Random thought: I've heard many times (especially by you-know-who) that the reason for why the South broke so heavily against Obama is the fact that he's "too liberal" and can't connect with poor, rural voters.  If that's true, then why did he almost lose Arkansas to the more progressive John Wolfe, Jr. in the Democratic primary?

Because John Wolfe is white. I doubt many of his voters actually knew that he was to Obama's left, or anything at all. But many white Democrats in Arkansas dislike Obama, and so voted for the other option on the ballot.
