Domenici was a good ol' boy type of Republican who would have been Teabagged hard if he had been running in this era.  He built the strangest coalition of labor unions and big oil here in New Mexico that made him popular with everyone despite never actually doing anything besides vote party line.  Jeff Bingaman also did this.  I guess they cancelled each other out.

Yeah, I've pretty much accepted by this point that pretty much all politicians are crooked and/or hypocrites. It is a bit more eye-popping to find someone has a secret child than simply an affair though.
