The same is true of South Wales, of course. Though stereotypically (let's stress that word a lot!) they worked in service industries that grew up around mining, rather than down the pits themselves.

The Monongalia Valley where Manchin and Oliverio are from can't ever have been particularly homogeneous, what with the proximity of Pittsburgh. Manchin is half Italian and half Czech by ancestry. Remember how badly Southern West Virginia has depopulated since 1960.

Shellley Moore is of course merely married to an Italian, and I don't know if he's from the state.

Capito is warning the Republicans that holding her House seat could be harder than they expect.

Hard to cover? Try living in Kansas, or just about any Mountain West state, for that matter. It's a days trip to get from one end of KS-01 to the other.

Nick Casey (D) has nearly $500K raised, with $420K on hand.

This is looking like it is going to be a race.

Awesome, if he can win it, it's a free(ish) House seat for Dems at the cost of a Senate seat everyone knows is going to be nigh-impossible to keep anyway. Every bit helps.

Might as well post this in this thread:

Glen Gainer, WV's longtime State Auditor and a guy who many hoped would run for Senate, is looking at a run against McKinley in WV-01.

Gainer carried the district 59/41 in his reelection last year, FWIW.

I'd still say it's Likely R unless there's some strong wave coming. WV's going to be hostile to Democrats this cycle, and the Democratic Party does not have much time left.

Or Texas's 23rd district - one of the few where you can take a regularly scheduled commercial airline flight from one end of the district (San Antonio) to the other (El Paso) - in a different time zone to boot.

WV-02 is probably, ironically, the best district in the state for Democrats these days.

The National Journal has a spot on Alex Mooney, the ex-Maryland GOP Chair who moved to WV just to run for this seat.
