This guy at my work who was also a very good employee in all other respects recently got fired because he came in while obviously smelling heavily of weed....despite the fact that it's well known that much of the management and many supervisors use marijuana.

I mean yeah he shouldn't have made it obvious but it still seems unfair.

It is a bummer for everyone who loses their job, however, he deserved it and it is in no way unfair.

If your management is ripping bowl hits before work they should all be fired too.

No they do it after work. However I've talked to other people who have admitted to coming to work high and none were fired (one said he's never going to do it ever again though because he was so paranoid the whole time.)

This is just the natural conclusion of allowing "casual" dress in workplaces. Soon you'll have people coming in in their underwear or covered in sweat after a workout. It's disgusting.

That happens a lot in the summer for the people who bike there.

I'm sure there is a whole host of crap that people do every day that by strict definition of the corporate rules could get you fired. However, you shouldn't be stupid like your ex co-worker here and just make it so obvious and really a case of gross negligence on their part if they didn't fire him.

You sure they didn't want to can him anyway, and this was just an excuse?  Also, he must not use pot much, to be that impaired. Pot just doesn't work that way - at least for me. It's more subtle.

Absolutely not. Based on the very objective numbers used to measure job performance this guy was easily in at least the top quartile of employees on site and regularly won bonuses.

Also, he must not use pot much, to be that impaired. Pot just doesn't work that way - at least for me. It's more subtle.

As noted, it was apparently because of the smell, not any signs of impairment.

Very odd then. I guess brush you teeth and take mouthwash after toking in the car, before walking in to work is the ticket here.

It sounds to me to be sort of unfair, I mean if their is a rule against coming to work under the influence in any way then technically he should be fired, technically not in actuality. While it may not be totally unfair, if this guy is a good, hard worker like you say he is, then it's more stupid to fire him than it is unfair. I mean there aren't tons of employees who have not once come in unprepared for work (whether it be because of being hungover, high on drugs, or just plain lack of sleep.) I agree with your original point about how he should of tried to make it less obvious. But no he shouldn't have been fired.

Yes, but ultimately management has a right to do this sort of thing.

Or at least use a vaporizer!

I feel bad when someone loses a job.. but I don't for the reason. I'd get fired if I did that too.. it's why I don't smoke.

Somewhat. I certainly would if he failed a drug test from use outside of work.

See what I don't get about this stuff is if the issue is not wanted a supposedly inebriated employee on site why not just send them home and count it as an unexcused absence?

Somewhat. I certainly would if he failed a drug test from use outside of work.

Something that once happened one April 1:

*General manager walking by my team and supervisor*: So anyway guys, we'll be doing a round of drug testing soon, all of you will have to by the end of the week.
*Some people get very nervous looking.*
One guy: Are you serious?
General manager: No. Of course not.
Me: You guys know what today's date is right?

Call centers get paid based on how many calls they handle and man hours they put in. Simfan if you fired every single person at my job who's used marijuana in the past 30 days you'd lose so many people the site would become impossible to be profitable for several months and might end up closed before then. Not to mention it'd be quite difficult to manage as well considering how many supervisors and management you'd also have to let go...

Keep in mind this is the type of place that has had to ask for lots of overtime due to a large number of backfill hours needed after the releases of Skyrim, Borderlands 2, and several World of Warcraft expansions.

Easy. Close the office and go to India. Or better yet, Ghana. Give my own people jobs.

As general manager that's not your choice to make.

Also if you want to go to a place where marijuana is uncommon India would not be a wise choice...

Don't go anywhere stinking like weed. I have a hard time feeling bad for this guy. Seriously, all he needs is a bit of cologne. Chew a stick of gum. Or even better, wait till you get off work to get high. It's not that hard.
