U.S. Senate Race

In an early look at the 2014 Democratic U.S. Senate primary, Newark Mayor Cory Booker leads incumbent Sen. Frank Lautenberg 51 - 30 percent.

New Jersey voters approve 50 - 34 percent of the job Sen. Lautenberg is doing, but say 45 - 36 percent he does not deserve to be reelected.

Only 21 percent of voters say Lautenberg's age gives him the wisdom and experience to do a good job as a U.S. Senator, while 71 percent say his age makes the work too difficult.

Lautenberg gets a 42 - 32 percent favorability rating, compared to 54 - 16 percent for Booker. Booker gets a higher likability score among every group measured.

U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez gets a 51 - 33 percent job approval.

"Nothing but positive scores for Newark Mayor Cory Booker. U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg gets an OK job-approval rating and favorability, but voters don't think he should seek six more years in the Senate," Carroll said.

From January 15 - 21, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,647 registered voters with a margin of error of +/- 2.4 percentage points. Live interviewers call land lines and cell phones. The survey includes 616 Democrats with a margin of error of +/- 4 percentage points.
