Does silence mean agreement?

That was easier than I thought it would be. Tongue

I don't see how, it kind of uphends some important aspects of the Senate even if it succeeds. If it doesn't work then it will make running the Senate that much more difficult.

Why is that? Just because there will be more votes to corral and another member whose inactivity can be an obstacle for everyone else to work around?

First off, I feel uncomfortale with the concept of "votes to corral", members seems more appropriate. Tongue With ever extra inactive Senator, the slower the Senate moves. Procedural questions and deliberations on content get stretched out even longer, etc etc.

I'm not under any illusions that I'll be able to stop this, but I have to reiterate my opposition on principle. Sorry, it's not my nature to be so stubborn on legislation, but I do genuinely think giving the President effectively a personal at-large Senator is a mistake.

I think Yankee has a point - let's face it, the Senate isn't always as active as it could be. Yankee (and most other PPTs, we've had a couple, right?) drive themselves apoplectic as is trying to get everyone to show up and vote. Adding one member to that list might not seem like a major problem, but I'm worried.

I suppose the reasoning is that this legislation would lead to a more active Vice President, inherently, because of the extra powers of the office, but I'm not convinced that that's true - Presidents regularly go inactive, as do regular Senators, after all.

Well we have a full Senate now, and I see nothing to gain from delaying any longer here.

We ready for a final vote?

I don't know if I support this amendment as currently worded.

Which words pose a problem for you?

I don't like the idea that a tied vote is considered failed. Also, this statement
Well we have a full Senate now, and I see nothing to gain from delaying any longer here.

wouldn't be true if this amendment were in effect. Tongue

How could a tied be a passing vote though? It kind of violates majority rules, doesn't it?

Again, I'm sorry to be so stubborn on this. It's not in my nature to be reactionary on changing the Constitution, but I'm really strongly opposed to the principle behind this amendment. I'll have to vote Nay.

Change my vote to Nay. The Vice President already has a clear purpose and its up to our President to provide that opportunity. I wonder whether or not a composite list of Vice Presidential purposes would assist us in reaching a consensus. What do you think?

If we do decide that we would like to expand the Senate, I think there are far more interesting and worthwhile ways to go about it.

I like the idea. I think the problem with it, with the SoIA, and with many other positions is there is not a lack of stuff to be doing but in fact there is quite a lot and second of all it is not right up fron but strewn across millions of bills, and such and thus both intimidate and discourage the work from getting done. The SoFE is the same way, it is just that votin is a kinda of a Big Fing deal here and we have made sure the job gets down one way or another. But the game seems to trudge on without the others since their inaction doesn't preclude us from playing the game, it just makes it suck.

This Amendment has enough votes to fail, Senators have 24 hours to change their votes.
