2013 = 1776, except instead of taxation without representation, we just have way too many dead kids

That's the price we have to pay for freedom.

Mayors Against Illegal Guns (http://www.demandaplan.org/) claims 400,000 have joined their group.
I wasn't aware that this was a grassroots group, as the group's name suggests that it's an organization of mayors.
On the other hand, they seem to be more active than the Brady Campaign.

It would be interesting to see the breakdown in membership for pro- and anti-gun groups.  At least if we can have access to that information. The National Rifle Association alone has about 4.3 million members as of mid-2011.

It's awful that they would gain, but at 4.2 million when you figure in the legions of rural people in the USA, the silver lining is that it's not THAT many because the entire population of the country is about 315+ million, I believe. That's .015%. But it's a little like the number of people who listen to Hannity and Limbaugh. It could be far worse, and reasonable people can surely be reached about how thoroughly unreasonable the NRA is. And of course it's a shame that a minority like that can get everything they want.

So there are at least 100 thousand callous, tin-foil hat, gun fetishists out there. What a comforting thought.

That's 315 million. Not 3.15 billion.

Very good, yes. If you're inclined to look at the silver lining, a small minority. Smiley

But I'm kidding myself a little, because as we know, there are certain tiny minorities who wield phenomenal power, and this would be one.

Do NRA members commit a lot of violence related gun crimes?  Otherwise I'm not seeing the outrage here.  Unless this is just the usual recreational outrage from the Recreational Outrage Division, in which case, feel free to ignore.

Can't do anything but applaud a surge in NRA membership, even though this one is motivated primarily by fear.

Paranoid fear is pretty much what the NRA gets off on in their entirety.

The number is going to grow even more thanks to good ol' Joe Biden, talking about Obama using executive order to bring new gun control laws. If Obama even TRIES to do this, there are going to be mass protests, and all the power to them. If the democrats want the NRA to have less influence, then they have to go through congress.

Perhaps this is more disturbing if you believe this source that 1.5 million AR-15 magazines are on backorder

Tripe. Obama isn't going to "make new laws" via executive order. Just tougher enforcement of existing laws & regulations.

I'm saying just the mention of this is enough to get some people to join. If he does anything, even something very minor, without going through congress, then there is going to be backlash.

If I owned an AR-15, I'd likely be ordering spare magazines right now too.  While a ban on the manufacture and sale of new large capacity magazines might be passed, there's no way that any sort of confiscation of the ones already sold will pass or that if it did it would be effective.
