The myki is a measure of government spending, set at 1.5 billion Australian dollars (1,575,450,000 USD; 1,194,880,500 Euro) primarily used to measure waste.

Briefly, myki is the Melbourne and Victorian public transport ticketing system. It's half a decade overdue, doesn't work, actually reduces flexibility, and is broadly detested by everyone, even if the original idea was a good one. It's a child of the state Labor government, but the stuff-ups have most certainly continued on with the current Liberal/National government. Unbelieveably, the card costs $6, you have to wait up to three days for top-ups to be active, and you can't buy one-trip tickets - the only major city in the world where this is the case. So, tough shid tourists, charities, and infrequent users.

ANYwoo, myki is actually now closing in on a total cost of $2,000,000,000, but the measurement is stable at 1.5b which could buy you:

Two Mars rover missions.

Stansted Airport, London.

The Burj Khalifa, tallest building in the world.

Two Tokyo skytrees, the second tallest.

The Police force, with quite a bit of cash to spare.

A hospital, or three.

Nice! Here's an epic fail project from over here in the States. This time from the private sector.

This is also of overblown fame for almost entirely unrelated reasons... but it's Australia's worst example of this sort of thing, too.

So...you have to buy a card to use public transportation, but any funds you put on it aren't active for three days. And you can't buy a one way ticket. So for three days there's no way to get around if you don't have a car, and tourism doesn't look so nice now.

Who the hell thought this system up?

How important is tourism in Australia? I'd suspect a great many people would love to visit except for the tyrrany of distance.
