With it having been many, many decades since the Democrats last won, the party is hoping that the strong field they've been able to gather this year--especially strong when compared to what they had four years ago--that they can pull off a victory. The front-runner is Samuel J. Tilden of New York, a rising star who helped bring down Boss Tweed.

Obviously only within the context of his time, but yes, the better man definitely "lost" in 1876.  Fun fact, his gravestone reads "I still trust the people."
