I would appreciate it if people like Lief try to view this event in its own light, and not as a data point one can exploit in a political argument; I have resisted posting in the Connecticut thread for that reason.

That said, these school knifings are only increasing in number... the textbook explanation is that economic duress drive people to the brink. But apparently the person involved has a 20-year old history of mental illness, so China's blindness about mental health is also a huge issue. You know the authorities don't know how to solve the problem when this piece of news has been censored away, but news of the CT shooting is front and centre on Chinese websites.

Some of the comments on that Yahoo page are reprehensible, but aren't too far from what the Chinese public are thinking. My fear is that, as more of these incidents happen, there is a growing popular desire for vigilantism and a want for less restrained gun laws.
